Mickleton is supporting British Hedgehog Week 5−11th May 2025
Over the past 20 years, hedgehogs have shown a 30-75% decline across different countryside areas. One of the main reasons that hedgehogs are struggling in Britain is because our fences and walls are becoming more and more secure, reducing the amount of land available to them.

However, we can make their life much easier.
Hedgehogs can travel up to 2km in a night, but to journey around the village they need routes between gardens.
For Hedgehog Week, we are asking our community to:
- Create a hedgehog hole, better still two, through your fences and walls. Holes need to be at least 13cm x 13cm. Work with your neighbours to create the route and holes. Details for making hedgehog holes can be found at: https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/actions/how-create-hedgehog-hole
- Map your hedgehog hole here: https://bighedgehogmap.org/holes-for-hedgehogs-home/map-hedgehog-hole
Mickleton had just three hedgehog hole holes in April, so let’s see how many more hedgehog holes we can create in our village. - Map your hedgehog sightings (alive or dead) at the same website.
- The first 10 Mickleton residents to create a hedgehog hole and who contact Mickleton Parish Council: chris.cottam@mickletonparishcouncil.gov.uk will be given a hedgehog hole sign to ensure that future generations know to keep the route clear of debris.
If you really want to make our hedgehog friends feel at home, why not provide exactly that – a hedgehog home. Our local ‘Men in Sheds’ group will build and provide one for a cost of £25, with proceeds also going to support Campden Home Nursing. For further details please contact info@campdenhomenursing.org using the subject: ‘Mickleton Hedgehog House’.
