Could you be a fly-tipping guardian?

Cotswold District Council is recruiting ‘Fly-tipping Guardians’ to monitor fly-tipping hotspots across the district in a bid to reduce environmental crime.

Fly-tipping is the dumping of waste illegally and continues to be a problem in our rural district. Fly-tipping not only causes significant blight to our beautiful countryside but it can be very harmful to the environment and those animals who live in it.

As part of our ongoing campaign to reduce fly-tipping, we have installed cameras in fly-tipping hotspots across the district. These cameras will catch offenders fly-tipping and the images can be used as evidence to prosecute them.

Alongside the cameras we have installed signs to warn people that cameras may be in operation.

Kev Lea, Enviro-Crimes Programmes Officer, said, “The signs themselves act as a great deterrent to fly-tippers as they know they are at risk of being caught.

“The cameras and signs are moved around the district regularly so that offenders can’t tell where the camera locations are.

“In order to move the signs around across the whole district, we need your help!

“The role of a Guardian is to move the signs around every few weeks, whether that be on your way to work, out walking your dog or out playing with your children. Being a Guardian can take as much or as little of your time as suits you!

“I already have a few Guardians helping in some towns and villages, and their work has been invaluable so far! However, to reduce fly-tipping further, we need as many Guardians as possible across the whole district.

“If you care about protecting our environment and would like to support the Council in our fight against fly-tippers, please do get in touch!”
