Consultation on future of Mickleton’s telephone kiosk
British Telecommunications Ltd. (BT) has launched a consultation into decommissioning of 16 telephone kiosks around Cotswold District. This includes the kiosk in Mickleton on the High Street/Church Lane. As a ‘listed’ structure, BT proposes to remove the telephony and lock the kiosk.
Published: 10 March 2025

Figures provided by BT show that Mickleton’s telephone kiosk has been used for calls just 20 times in the past year, and notes that no calls were to helpline numbers. They also note there is mobile phone coverage in the village.
As a result, the industry regular OFCOM determines the process that must be followed: there is a 90-day consultation period, which consists of a period of public consultation of 45 days and a period thereafter for the local planning authority – Cotswold District Council – to reach a position to feed into the process.
If you have any thoughts on what should be done, you can provide feedback to Mickleton Parish Council on BT’s proposal. You may agree, object to the removal of telephony services or seek to ‘adopt’ the call box. Please note: objections will need to be justified by evidence on social need, such as evidence of the location being an accident or suicide hotspot or no mobile phone coverage.
The parish council or another appropriate community group may seek to ‘adopt’ the call box. This represents an opportunity to retain the box, and to repurpose to provide ongoing community benefit. Please note in such an instance, the telephony is removed, and the community takes on the ownership of the call box to use as it sees fit.
